The Orchard Project has made the front page of September’s issue of the Weaverham news:

WEAVERHAM COMMUNITY ORCHARD

Yes, you can help to bring our own village tree back from near extiction in memory of the villagers (Russets) who were killed or injured in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts.

Wareham is the old name for Weaverham, and the Wareham Russet apple tree was once prolific in our orchards, which were grubbed up in order to build houses.

Following a public meeting in December, an Action Group was set up in order to plant a community orchard of Wareham Russets and other local heritage trees, and to plant Wareham Russets around our village.

We will need help raising money for the orchard as well as help with planting trees etc. If you wish you can even buy a Wareham Russet to plant in your own garden. Of course, you’ll have to wait a while for us to take scions from a verifiable tree and graft on to root stock.
